The UK has a target that 15% of its electricity must be generated from renewable sources by 2015. This has confirmed the important part that hydro and wind generation will have to play in the future. Scottish and Southern Energy recognises this ambitious target and has embarked on a programme of investment into renewable energy to help achieve this objective.
We are the UK’s leader in generating electricity from renewable sources, owning and operating around 40% of the total renewable generation capacity available.
Hydro Generation
At the heart of our ‘green’ generation portfolio are over 60 hydro-electric power station. We have embarked on a £350 million programme of investment in refurbishing these existing hydro electric power stations whilst seeking opportunities to develop new sites for hydro capacity
Scottish and Southern Energy is building what will be the UK’s second largest conventional hydro electric power stations at Glendoe, near Loch Ness. With an installed capacity of 100MW, Glendoe will produce in an average year around 180GWh of electricity qualifying for Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs)
Wind Generation
Scottish and Southern Energy completed construction work at there wind farm at Hadyard Hill in Ayrshire in March 2006 when it became the first ever wind farm in the UK to generate over 100MW of electricity. This farm along with three other existing wind farms situated at Tangy in Argyll, Spurness on the Orkney Islands and Artfield Fell in Wigtownshire takes SSE’s portfolio of wind farms to 162MW of total capacity.
Environmentally Friendly and Green Generation.
Scottish and Southern Energy are able to offer a comprehensive portfolio of Green products, which are both audited and certificated. Depending on availability we can offer Green Energy to one or all sites, either for their full energy requirement, or as a percentage.
Renewable Source CCL exempt
Scottish and Southern Energy's renewable portfolio largely comprises of Wind, Small Scale Hydro and Biomass. All of which are accredited under the future Energy Scheme operated by the Energy saving trust, supply is audited by Market Quality Assurance (MQA) within ISO 9001. Supply under this offer will be CCL exempt.
Under these guidelines technologies which have been initially supported under the Non Fossil Fuel Obligation (NOFO) may claim zero carbon emissions.
Large Scale Hydro
The Scottish and Southern Energy Group are owners of one of the largest portfolios of hydro generation in the UK. We are currently generate 1068 MW of Large scale hydro plant which makes us the largest generator from renewable sources in Great Britain, accounting for over 40% of the market. Hydro generation is truly renewable energy as we carefully manage and make use of rainfall through its natural cycle to generate electricity. This form of generation is not CCL exempt however it is fully auditable and certificated.
CCL exempt, Qualifying Combined Heat and Power (QCHP)
Generation from this source qualifies for exemption due to the highly efficient production of both electricity and heat from a single source. There is a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 30% compared to conventional generation.
